Big Blues: How Joe Schoen's Reign Is Keeping the Giants from Competing

The New York Giants, once a storied franchise with a rich history of championship success, now find themselves mired in a prolonged era of mediocrity, struggling to recapture their former glory. The Giants have the second worst win percentage in the NFL since 2017, second only to their cross-town rival New York Jets. For years now, we have been blinded by optimism and signs of hope that maybe the tides are finally changing for this team. However, after this lackluster offseason and the results from the first three weeks of the season, there can only be one culprit. His name is Joe Schoen.

Now, I am not saying Joe Schoen walked into a great situation. Dave Gettleman didn’t have a great tenure here either but he did hit on the most important position in all of sports. Yes, he did get it right! Daniel Jones has proven last year and so far this year that he is the guy that can lead this team to the promised land. He has gotten better year after year and has gotten rid of his turnover issues.

Let's start with Schoen's inability to put together an offensive line, an issue that the Giants have not been able to correct for years and years now. The right side of the line has been an absolute disaster so far. Even the star of the line, Andrew Thomas, has been sidelined for the past two games with a hamstring issue. The offensive line needs continuity to get better but through 3 games there has been ample movement. In San Francisco, the Giants only had 2 of the same starters that they did in Week 1 against Dallas. Unfortunately for Schoen, it looks like he missed big time on Evan Neal. He has struggled mightily so far this season, just look back to what the Cowboys did to him in Week 1.

Even if Daniel Jones has to time throw, he won’t find anyone open. The Giants brought in Darren Waller to help the cause but he only opens up the short game. There is still nobody for Jones to rely on to get open consistently down the field. Paris Campbell is not the guy that should have been brought in. Jalin Hyatt has a lot of talent but is still a rookie trying to find his way in this league. Joe Schoen brought in a lackluster receiving core AGAIN, for a team that won a playoff game last year. If you look in the division, you can see how much help Dallas and Philadelphia has gotten for their quarterbacks. The Cowboys selected CeeDee Lamb in the first round and if we go back further, they traded for Amari Cooper to help out Dak Prescott. Howie Roseman drafted Devonta Smith and traded for AJ Brown to give Jalen Hurts a deadly receiving duo. We are now in a throwing league but it seems Joe Schoen hasn’t gotten that message.

The Giants cannot compete with the Eagles, Cowboys, or 49ers this season. They will not make a deep playoff run this year, which shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. Joe Schoen will have a lot of reflection to do at season’s end and a lot of work to do to put together a team that Giants fans can actually believe in.
